First-Generation Students: Increased Participation in Study Abroad Programs

In recent years, study abroad programs at the University of Colorado Denver have seen a notable shift towards inclusivity and personalized learning experiences, particularly through Faculty-Led Programs* and the increased participation of first-generation college students. From 2017 to 2024, the university sent a total of 2,236 students abroad for studies; a significant recovery in post-pandemic involvement that demonstrated the resilience and growing interest in global education among the student body. A deep dive into the data reveals a definite trend: in the 2023-2024 academic year, an impressive 78.89% of Ö÷²¥ÓÕ»ó study abroad participants chose Faculty-Led Programs. This preference highlights the value students place on the guided, immersive educational experiences these programs offer, allowing for closer faculty mentorship and a curriculum integrated with their studies at Ö÷²¥ÓÕ»ó. Taylor H., who attended the program, wrote that besides the experience itself, “my favorite part of this study abroad trip was the group of students and professors I got to share it with. It is insane how you can spend 22 days abroad with people you associate as strangers and then return to the U.S. recognizing them as friends and family.” Faculty study abroad programs foster friendships that students can carry with them to graduation and beyond.
Upon returning from Ö÷²¥ÓÕ»ó in Cuba: Exploring Music in Cuban Culture, recipient Diana L. wrote “studying abroad has been an opportunity that made me fall more in love with my major and career... One of the reasons I had the opportunity to study abroad was because of the support I received from the Office of Global Education: Study Abroad. Between their scholarships, academic planning, and enthusiasm, I got to have a once in a lifetime experience.”
From 2017 to 2023, Ö÷²¥ÓÕ»ó's Study Abroad programs have welcomed 621 first-generation students into a world of global education, offering them unique opportunities to expand their horizons and academic achievements. A significant portion of these students, notably 80% in the 2022-2023 academic year, chose Faculty-Led Programs. First-generation student Jesselina C., who chose the faculty-led program Ö÷²¥ÓÕ»ó in France: From Lavender Fields to Roman Ruins, wrote that “going to a different country without knowing the language was something I never thought I would have the courage to do. After experiencing that and realizing how rewarding it was, I knew I would be able to do anything I set my mind to.”
The Office of Global Education: Study Abroad is also proud to share a story about one of their own. Nicole Herrin, a first-generation college student and Ö÷²¥ÓÕ»ó alum, embarked on a transformative study abroad program that reshaped her academic trajectory. Inspired by her experiences abroad, she transitioned from medicine to international studies, now utilizing her journey as one of the esteemed global education program managers. Regarding her experience in the program CU Anschutz in Cuba: Intensive Study of Public Health Services, she said, “I had my boundaries pushed, my academic ability tested, and my heart and soul fulfilled by my time in Cuba. If you have the chance to study abroad… I highly encourage you to do whatever it takes to make that opportunity a reality!” As the number of first-generation students participating in study abroad programs continues to rise, it shows a promising future of diversity, cross-cultural understanding, and academic enrichment in global education.
Within Ö÷²¥ÓÕ»ó's study abroad programs, the enduring impact of faculty-led initiatives, scholarships, and the unique experiences of first-generation students illuminates the university's commitment to diverse and inclusive learning environments. From exploring ancient ruins, indulging in new cuisine, and immersing themselves in local communities, participants have not only broadened their horizons but also forged connections that transcend borders.
