Choosing A Program

While there are many factors to consider when choosing a study abroad program, here are some of the most important factors to think about.

How long do you want to study abroad?
When do you want to study abroad?
Where do you want to go?
What kind of classes do you want to take?
Are you interested in interning, service-learning, or conducting research abroad?

Making a list can be very helpful. Do some soul-searching. When you close your eyes and imagine yourself studying abroad, where are you? On a coast, in a big city, in a jungle? What is your intended career path? Which programs will be most beneficial to your future professional advancement or personal development?

��ջ� | Anschutz offers over 30 during Winter, Maymester, and Summer terms each year. These programs range from two to four weeks in duration, and from two to six credits. These programs are ��ջ� | Anschutz courses, taught by ��ջ� | Anschutz faculty, and all take place in another country. The credits earned fall under a predetermined ��ջ� | Anschutz course number, so there is no need to worry about transfer of credit. Program availability varies from year to year.

��ջ� offers two : Bridging Global Divides in Berlin and Semester in Beijing. The Bridging Global Divides program in Berlin offers up to 15 credit hours of courses from both CLAS & SPA. Courses change each semester but can include PSCI, SOCY, HIST, PUAD, or CRJU. Students who participate in Semester in Beijing choose their classes from a list of pre-approved courses including Communication, Economics, English, Political Science, Math, Philosophy, etc.

Students may also study abroad on non-��ջ� programs offered by study abroad companies, commonly known as “third-party providers.” Third-party providers boast programs all over the world, for every major, and for varying lengths of time (two weeks to a full academic year). Students studying on third-party programs are required to in the Office of Global Education (OGE) to discuss the process before submitting an application. Note that students will have to submit two applications for third-party programs: the ��ջ� study abroad application and the specific third-party provider’s application on their website. To ensure the transfer of study abroad credits back to ��ջ�, OGE will facilitate the course approval process alongside students’ academic advisors prior to students’ departure.

SIT Study Abroad offers semester and summer, experiential, field-based programs for undergraduate students in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East, as well as multi-country programs. SIT encourages students to step beyond the boundaries of a traditional classroom to analyze and understand the critical issues shaping local communities around the globe. SIT programs foster academic rigor, intensive cultural immersion, substantial community engagement, and an emphasis on field-based research and internships. You’ll find SIT on every continent, among the ecosystems of Southern Patagonia and Antarctica; on the shores of Siberia’s Lake Baikal; in Senegal’s vibrant hip-hop scene and Malaysia’s dynamic Islamic banking and business centers; at the heart of autonomy movements in Spain and Scotland; researching the biodiversity of Madagascar; in the migrant centers of the Middle East, and at many more amazing locations in between.	Amideast Education Abroad is the only study abroad provider which specializes in the MENA region. Our programs develop mutual understanding, improve participants’ Arabic or French language skills, and provide innumerable opportunities to interact with the peoples and cultures of the region, especially local families, organizations, and students. The IFSA study abroad experience is about creating serious momentum for the professional you’re becoming. Non-Approved ��ջ� Study Abroad Programs

OGE has invested significant resources to offer a wide range of study abroad offerings that reflect the diversity of our students' interests and meet their academic needs. If a student feels strongly about participating on a non-��ջ� study abroad program that is not on the university's list of affiliate or approved programs, they must complete a “Petition for Non-Approved ��ջ� Study Abroad Programs.” This option is available only to students who meet the ��ջ� study abroad eligibility requirements and have a specific, clearly articulated academic need that cannot be met by any existing ��ջ� study abroad offerings. Some students pursue international academic opportunities that do not fall into the above-mentioned categories of study abroad. These additional opportunities might include research abroad, conferences, field work, international language schools, and clinical rotations for graduate students in the medical fields.

All students going abroad for academic purposes must register with the Office of Global Education. In doing so, we can provide important health and safety resources such as international health insurance, safety workshops, and more. If you are planning on pursuing this option, please email study.abroad@ucdenver.edu and indicate the following: name, school/college, country and intended dates of travel, purpose of travel. Each school/college may require additional steps for international travel, above and beyond the Global Education application.

About the Program

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers fellowships abroad for one academic year to graduating college seniors, graduate students, young professionals, scientists and artists. Program participants pursue graduate or professional study, advanced research, or English teaching in elementary and secondary schools or universities. Each year, approximately 1,600 Americans traveling to more than 140 countries receive support from the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.

The Boren Awards are scholarships of up to $25,000 for undergraduates and up to $30,000 for graduate fellowships for U.S. citizens who are planning to study a foreign language in an eligible world region. Boren Scholars and Fellows from diverse fields of study immerse themselves in the cultures in world regions critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Boren Award recipients also make a commitment to work in the U.S. federal government for a minimum of one year and are eligible for exclusive opportunities and preferential consideration for jobs in the federal government. For consideration, students must be matriculated in an undergraduate or graduate degree program or applying to graduate school and must be non-citizens of the destination location.
